Elandsbaai

The Point and the Crowd
If you’ve ridden a surf board in South Africa you will know there are two places which loom large in the imagination of all South African surfers: The iconic Jeffreys’ Bay on the East Coast and its West Coast incarnation, Elandsbaai.

Whereas Jeffreys is synonymous with the WCT, glamour and tubes, Elands conjures up images of rural beauty, dusty roads and walls begging to be carved to pieces. Located only 235km from Stellenbosch it’s a whole lot more viable as a weekend destination too.

So a bunch of Maties Surf Club members took the opportunity of the Women’s day long weekend to head north-west, up the cold wescus to escape the monotony of the Stellenbosch weekend scene and hopefully score some epic surf. And that they did, with some choosing to explore the surrounding breaks like, Farmer Burgers, Garbage Dumps and Yo-yos, while others stayed in Elands and surfed themselves silly at the Point, Bottle-tops and the Shipwreck.

Despite having to fight off feral cats, hungry locals and an intense crowd the Maties surfers came home happy. Surfed silly. And with the biggest attendance to a surf club away weekend to Elands to boot.

Peter, the consummate host

Thanks to all of you who made the trip and especially to Petie-2-Pie for hosting the mob in your folks beach house. To those of you who missed it, there’s always next year… (Fair warning for you to get your ducks in a row, design excuses for missing classes, tests, anniversaries and other trivial real world matters.)

As Andrew likes to say: “Keep the stoke,” oh, and there are still busses running on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Plus a party to cap another year of surfing behind the boerworse curtain, so keep an eye on the club’s Facebook page.
